Marketing has never owned a number. It borrows one from sales.
Which is why nothing it presents ever quite lands, why the budget conversation never changes, and why a business can grow for years without knowing whether any of it was worth doing.
I spent twenty-five years making that mistake. This is what I understood afterwards.
Revenue was never going to stick.
Sales owns it. So every claim marketing makes ends up in the same argument about who won the deal, and everyone in the room knows there's no way to settle it.
Meanwhile the thing marketing could have owned has been sitting there the whole time. What a customer costs to win, against what that customer's worth.
Not a mystery. Just nobody's job.
Sometimes the answer is stop.
Counted properly, every cost in and the value read on margin, that number can fall below one. When it does it names the segment, the channel and the route doing it.
No measure marketing has ever held could say that word. This one can, and a plan gets built on the answer.
Year one usually comes out of the money you're already spending.
