Alan Edwards The Marketing Blind Spot

Win the brand budget you keep losing.

A number that shows what weak brand is already costing, in the language the finance director uses. You take it in before you present anything creative.

Why you lose.

The marketing director loves it. Then they argue for it with awareness and equity, against requests that arrive with a payback figure.

Yours isn't rejected. It's deferred, because there's nothing to compare it to.

What we measure instead.

Not what brand might deliver. What its absence already costs.

Longer sales cycles. Deeper discounting. Lower win rates. More work per lead.

The first, third and fourth push up what a customer costs. The second pulls down what they're worth.

And all four are already in your client's own systems. Cycle length in the CRM. Discounts in the deal record. Win rates in the monthly report. Margin in the accounts.

None of it asks finance to believe in brand.

What it doesn't claim.

It sizes the problem. It doesn't promise a recovery, and you shouldn't either.

What you can say: here's what the current position costs, here's the baseline, here's what we'll be measured against.

No creative agency has been able to say that before.

How you make money.

  • Resell it.Buy at a partner rate, sell it as paid discovery.
  • Use it to win.Buy at a reduced rate against the engagement. Nothing on the report, everything on the programme. Most choose this.
  • Share the result. We run it, and take a small share of the first year's fee if you win.

A year later.

Run it again. Cycle shorter, discounting down, ratio moved.

Proof of your own commercial effect, in a form the board recognises.

Win the work with it. Then prove the work with it.

If you've lost this argument recently, it's worth a conversation.

Tell me what you sell and who you sell it to. I'll say honestly whether this changes anything for you.
